Manchester City started off the season with victory over West Brom, Chelsea and Newcastle United. The return to form of captain and centre-back Vincent Kompany and midfield general Yaya Toure has breathed confidence into the club as they seek to win their third Premier League title. The losses to West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur and the 0-0 draws to Manchester United and Aston Villa have also shown the crucial impact of striker Sergio Aguero and playmaker David Silva are to the clubs ambition after both players were missing during these games due to injury.

Manchester United started off the season with a 3-0 loss to Arsenal and will have begged questions of both the defensive and attacking form of the club. Captain and striker Wayne Rooney has also not yet hit goal-scoring form for the club, only scoring 2 goals this season, as manager Louis van Gaal seeks to win his first Premier League title with the club. Van Gaal’s tendency to play players out of position is also a problem for the club when the defence that finished in the loss to Arsenal included three midfielders in Antonio Valencia, Daley Blind and Ashley Young. Van Gaal seems to have found a formation that works for the team, however, with a 3-0 victory over to Everton. The defence is also beginning to show signs of improvement having kept five clean sheets in a row in all competitions with the help of centre-back Chris Smalling.
