The Mexicans took the upper hand early in the match, and the Cameroon players did not seem to be able to concentrate in the match. Pundits have speculated that their late arrival in Brazil due to pay disputes has made it difficult for them to get into the right mind frame for the group matches.

Mexico dominated much of the match, but were nearly caught out by a counter attack which saw star striker Samuel Eto’o hit the outside of the post.

The second half saw more Mexican dominance and they finally got their reward with a goal from Oribe Peralta on 61 minutes. Dos Santos was again involved in the attack after Cameroon’s goalkeeper Charles Itandje palmed his shot straight to Peralta’s feet, who slotted home from close range.

Mexico will face hosts Brazil in their next group encounter on Tuesday, while Cameroon will take on Croatia on Thursday.
