UJ hosted the second meeting of the season on 14 April which saw Tuks win six of the 12 events. Tuks won both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay beating off challenges from NWU and UJ, who finished second and third respectively. The women of Tuks Athletics had a particularly good evening on the track winning the 400m hurdles, 1500m, 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. Tuks star sprinter Akani Simbine cruised to victory in the 200m as he broke NWU’s Gideon Trotter’s record from last year finishing in 20.66, while Trotter lagged behind finishing second.

Tuks claimed yet another victory in the third Varsity Athletics meeting in Stellenbosch on 21 April. Despite the windy conditions, Tuks performed well at the meet and managed wins in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay. Tuks’s Stella Marais won the women’s 1 500m when UJ’s Mamphielo Sibanda fell ten metres short of the finish line allowing Marais to finish first in four minutes 29 seconds.

Tuks’s Rikinette Steenkamp went into the women’s 100m hurdles as a favourite and after false starts by NWU and UWC athletes the race was reduced to six runners and the Tuks athlete won the race comfortably in a time of 13.71 seconds.

Henrico Bruintjies from Tuks narrowly lost out to Trotter in the men’s 100m sprint, finishing second in 10.82 seconds, behind Trotter, who finished in 10.78 seconds. Tuks’s Chad Herman took the men’s javelin first place with a throw of 68.10m and Orazio Cremona continued his good form to take first place in the men’s shot-put with a distance of 20.07m. Cremona also walked away as the valedictorian on the night. UJ’s Zarcke Visser, current South African champion, won the men’s long jump with an impressive 7.78m leap. Visser beat Tuks’s Dwayne Boer, who jumped 7.66m.

Tuks won with a total of 121 points while NWU took second place with 102 points. Having won three out of three meets, Tuks face a grand stand finish when they host the fourth and final meet of the season in Pretoria on 28 April.
